You don't need a full field or fancy gear to help your child improve. A ball and a little space in the backyard or living room is enough. Here are five of our favorite at-home drills that build real skills while keeping things fun.
1. Toe taps
Have your child lightly tap the top of the ball with the bottom of each foot, alternating as quickly as they can. Start with 20 seconds and build up. This builds coordination, balance and a feel for the ball.
2. Red light, green light dribbling
Your child dribbles the ball forward on 'green light' and stops it dead under their foot on 'red light.' This teaches close control and the all-important skill of stopping the ball — a favorite for our youngest players.
3. Cone (or shoe) slalom
Line up a few shoes, cups or cones and have your child dribble in and out of them. Encourage using both feet. It's a simple way to develop close dribbling and changes of direction.
4. Wall passing
Find a safe wall and let your child pass the ball against it and control the rebound. This builds passing accuracy and a soft first touch — two fundamentals we emphasize at every session.
5. The freeze dance dribble
Put on a favorite song. Your child dribbles while the music plays and freezes — foot on the ball — when it stops. It blends fun and focus, which is exactly how young children learn best.
The takeaway
Ten minutes of playful practice a few times a week makes a real difference. Keep it light, celebrate the effort, and let your child's natural love for the ball grow.
